Here’s my advice on some of the issues mentioned here and elsewhere about the P5. For long trips we now have–what else?–a bigger wagon. Looking back, I don’t know what I was thinking. In years past I’ve had my entire five-person family in the car for a 700-mile trip. NVH couldn’t have been much of a consideration when it was engineered. Wind noise, road noise, engine noise, transmission noise-the entire dyssymphony is present. Compared to just about anything with four doors, though, the near-classic Mazda is rough and noisy. After driving a Lotus Elise, the Protege5 felt as high, quiet, and cushy as a Lincoln Navigator. In sharp contrast to a current batting-way-above-its-league Focus, the Protege5 ain’t got none. the Audis mentioned earlier, and BMW 5ers recently compared by C&D). The transition to electric power assisted steering (EPAS) for fuel economy reasons hasn’t helped, but even cars with hydraulic steering generally provide far less feedback (e.g. So, why does the auto industry no longer offer a car like this one in North America? Visibility was cast by the wayside due to styling trends. To thoroughly fix just the rear end a body shop will charge a couple grand, which can’t be rationally justified. I had more thorough rust repair performed once, a couple years ago. Each fall I remove what rust I can from the rear wheel openings and shock towers, slap on some rust converter, then paint. Where the roads are salted, small Mazdas predictably start to meld with atmosphere about six months after the five-year rust perforation warranty ends. Consider the Mazda Exhibit A in the case that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. In subjective terms, the P5 feels so alive and is so much fun, even in daily driving, that it has made nearly every car I’ve reviewed over the past decade seem dull, even boring in comparison. Even without stability control (which was never offered), every ounce of potential can be extracted from this car safely and easily. Testing out the car’s handling early on in a snow-covered parking lot, I had to resort to pulling the hand brake to get it to spin. (The thick, heavily padded steering wheels favored by many people and consequently common on performance-oriented cars block feedback.) A MINI or a 500 should feel as agile and provide communication as plentiful and nuanced, but doesn’t.īy lifting off the Protege5’s throttle as you enter a turn you can coax the rear end out a bit, but in general the car’s chassis is extremely stable. Though the low-effort steering can have an over-assisted, rubber-band feel at modest lock under light loads (a trait shared by the current Civic Si), both on-center and when you’re tossing the car precisely through a curve the rack and column seem to transmit EVERTYTHING through a relatively thin, minimally padded rim to your fingertips. First of all, despite a 2,800-pound curb weight, the car’s reactions to steering inputs are quicker than in any compact hatch I’ve driven since buying it. The Protege5 remains relevant for the same reasons I still own it. How does it possibly remain relevant today? So the P5 was designed and engineered back in the mid-nineties. I got a great deal ($18,900 MSRP, paid $13,400) because the new Mazda3 was in transit. When I bought my Protege5 back in November 2003, it was already at the end of its run. The gang supposedly gathers at the popular New Orleans Square attraction The Haunted Mansion, but once inside, they're really just in a generic filming-and-family-friendly haunted house. Halloween figures largely in the brisk proceedings, as a group of kids join Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and other prominent park personalities for some musical fun with the slightest tinge of spookiness. To sweeten the synergy, a theme park familiar to many becomes the locale, though if you can argue that volumes like Disneyland Fun, Beach Party at Walt Disney World, and Flik's Musical Adventure at Disney's Animal Kingdom are tantamount to for-sale advertising for their respective Disney Parks settings, it's harder to do so here, since Disneyland only prominently features in two places in this video, despite what the subtitle suggests.Īs you can probably guess from the title and cover art, the release of this DVD is timed to coincide with the ever-expanding Halloween season (Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party kicks off tonight at Walt Disney World). There is also a bit of the usual animated sampling in a few numbers. Of course, fulfilling the Sing Along portion is the presence, as always, of animated on-screen lyrics. Quite simply, this means that Happy Haunting take its cues from "Barney & Friends" (among others) by mixing ordinary young children with full-sized costumed characters for song and dance sequences. It is a descendant of the line "Mickey's Fun Songs" which soon came to be merged with the other Sing Along Songs titles. Happy Haunting comes from a different and slightly more original mold. While the earliest and newest Sing Along titles have been composed chiefly from recycled clips of Disney animated films, An end is not yet in sight more than a dozen titles in the series, long-discontinued on VHS, still have yet to resurface on disc. Last week, Sing Along Songs: Happy Haunting - Party at Disneyland!, originally released in 1998, became the ninth pre-existing Sing Along title to make its way to DVD in the course of one year. While the former thread seems to be winding down as direct-to-video sequels and non-princesses get tapped to fulfill an apparent 1-new-volume-a-year quota, the other source has a bit more life to it. Nonetheless, the Sing Along Songs format continues to live on in two ways: through the Disney Princess franchise and through untimely DVD debuts of old videocassette volumes. Then, in 2005, Chicken Little marked not only a jump to CGI and a different type of filmmaking, but also a departure from the Sing-Along tie-in its planned theatrical companion was scrapped. Once a viable way to promote the latest big animated Disney film in theaters (and an easy way to expand such a cinematic mega-event's hold on stores), the format grew weary as Disney's 2-D releases stopped being more than movies.Īfter a 5-year lapse (which reflected a shift in Disney's Feature Animation output), new volumes arrived alongside hardly-musicals Brother Bear and Home on the Range. At the same time, a grand tribute hardly seems in order, since the Sing Along series has undergone vast change and largely faded away in recent years. That two-decade span seems substantial when viewed alongside current DVD lines like the collectible Walt Disney Treasures, the thrifty Classic Cartoon Favorites, or our beloved bi-yearly Platinum Editions, each of which has existed less than one-fourth as long. In any case, Erving has made no secret of his disdain for the way that teams are loading the boat with talent these days. They also had two other All-Stars in Andrew Toney and Bobby Jones. In 1984 in particular, his Philadelphia 76ers had four future Hall of Famers in himself, Charles Barkley, Maurice Cheeks, and Moses Malone. Erving was part of some of those teams too. The obvious counterpoint, which was raised by Haynes, is that it was very common for elite NBA teams to have three or four All-Stars well before James even arrived in the league. But the criticism of James as the pioneer of sorts of superteams is an interesting one. The 71-year-old Erving obviously went all old-school with his picks, also declining to list players like Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, and Stephen Curry. Forget the GOAT, according to one NBA legend, LeBron James is not even a. Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Karl Malone, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar appeared on Erving’s second all-time team. J omits LeBron James from his all-time first and second NBA teams. I ain’t gonna pick his team.”Įrving named Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, and Elgin Baylor to his first all-time team. “He put together a team in Cleveland as well and put together a team in Los Angeles. “That was when I accepted Christ.“He’s the guy who led the charge in terms of superteams being put together when he put together a team in Miami,” said Erving of the four-time MVP James. The Hall of Famer then explained that these athletes still have things to prove and once they retire from the basketball courts he will consider them. The interviewer then asked why players like Stephen Curry or LeBron didn’t make his Top 10. “The next group of guys would be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Ervin ‘Magic’ Johnson, probably Karl Malone,” he mentioned.Įrving then struggled to name the last person on the list, before finally going for Tiny Archibald as his tenth and very surprising final selection. J gave his top 10 players all time (no order) □Įrving then decided on the next four players to make his superstar list, to which he decided with ease. Elgin Baylor would be in the frontcourt with Wilt and Bill Russell.”ĭr. I think West and Robertson would be in the backcourt. I’m sticking with it now all these years later. Everybody else has to be on the second team or the third team, and I made this decision when I was 15 years old. “I have five guys who are untouchable – Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor,” he said. The first half of the list was easy for him. The famous Sixers icon recently went on an interview with Joy DeAngela and talked about several things, including superteams, Dame Lillard’s desire to play for the Heat and of course, his favorite players of all time. While most have players like Michael Jordan on the top of the list, Hall of Famers like Julius Erving doesn’t believe that LeBron James should even make the Top 10. Whenever NBA legends give their takes on the GOAT debate, it always makes the headlines, especially because they all provide different perspectives on a subject that seems far from settled. Perhaps this is a sign that I should buckle down and just buy the albums outright, but it’s also a sign that Tidal could patch up a few missing spots in its library. But even in my first week of using Tidal, I’ve been disappointed to discover that a lot of my go-tos from Spotify simply aren’t present. Naturally, the exact tracks you can and can’t find will vary from listener to listener. But when it comes to older and more obscure albums, Tidal tends to be patchy, whereas Spotify is (sometimes surprisingly) robust. Both services have nearly complete discographies from major artists, and popular albums from more niche artists. Based on my own listening habits, I’ve definitely found a few blind spots in Tidal’s library. While Tidal claims to host more than 80 million tracks, Spotify claims to host more than 82 million. While I have no issue with Tidal’s music selection overall, there’s no denying that Spotify has more stuff. While I can almost guarantee that no musician is getting rich from Tidal, it’s at least more generous than some of its competitors. If you subscribe to Tidal’s $20-per-month HiFi Plus tier, it will also funnel “up to 10% of your subscription” to artists of your choice. One potential reason for this is that Tidal pays musicians much more per stream than Spotify does: about four times as much, according to one music enthusiast site Producer Hive. (Well, that and a potential case of fraud from back in 2018. Tidal is here to provide high-bitrate streaming music, and that seems to be the only thing it’s known for. Artists aren’t protesting it no one’s accusing it of spreading medical misinformation listeners aren’t drawing up political battle lines about what should and shouldn’t be on the service. While this may be sort of an ephemeral thing, it’s worth pointing out that Tidal isn’t mired in any kind of huge controversy at the moment. These features aren’t unique to Tidal, of course, but they’re vital for any good music app. You can choose your favorite tracks, listen to full albums, view hand-picked playlists or let the algorithm decide. (There also appears to be a respectable selection of pop and hip-hop, if you’re into that kind of thing.) The interface is clean and navigable, and the service has plenty of curation options. Over the past week, I’ve found almost everything I want to listen to, from chill bluegrass, to tried-and-true classic rock, to John Williams soundtracks and more. (They’re all popular, but it’s fair to say that none of them is topping the Billboard charts right now.) I was pleased to find Gillian Welch, The Rolling Stones and Hilary Hahn all listed among the top choices. When you first start up the program, Tidal asks you to pick three artists (ideally in three different genres) to get a good idea of your tastes. Thankfully, Tidal has been pretty good in this regard so far. But it’s good to know that if I decide to pay for a monthly subscription, I’ll be getting music at CD quality or better, rather than "mid-2000s era MP3."Īll the sound quality in the world won’t do you any good if an app doesn’t offer the music you want to listen to. On the free tier, Tidal offers a 160 kbps bitrate, the same as Spotify’s free tier. I haven’t decided whether or not to pay for Tidal yet, so my only access to this high-quality bitrate has been through a 30-day free trial. Spotify, on the other hand, tops out at 320 kbps, which is a sizable difference. The more moderate HiFi plan ($10 per month) streams at around 1,411 kbps. At the $20 per month HiFi Plus tier, you can get lossless bitrates of up to 9,216 kbps on certain master tracks. Tidal’s primary selling point over Spotify has always been its better sound quality. |
